Since he was drafted into the NBA, I always saw him as a talented athlete that felt his skills were underappreciated. When Stephon Marbury entered the league, Michael Jordan was and always will be the greatest player to have ever played the game. There was nobody in the league that could have dominated Jordan during his prime.
After playing in the NBA for thirteen years, Stephon Marbury decided to revive his career by relocating to China. It was a smart move and it turned out to be the best decision he made. Stephon Marbury has blossomed into becoming one of the best basketball players overseas. He won three championships with the Beijing Ducks for the Chinese Basketball Association.
Marbury has not only made it, but has thrived in a culture he knew very little about. There is a lesson that can be learned from his story: “When one door closes, another one opens.” Therefore, he decided to take his talents overseas when the NBA would no longer give him a chance.
As individuals, things will not always go the way you planned, but there always has to be a better way to accomplish the goals we set for ourselves. Playing in an environment that appreciates his talents has made him a more prosperous basketball player on the court. Stephon Marbury’s story is a great example of triumph over tragedy. I am happy to see him take a bad situation and turn it into something positive.
China has finally brought him peace, happiness, and the necessary support system in his career that he never had in America. If a person is determined to improve their situation in life, they will find a way to make it happen.
